A 'Barrel' is not just a vessel for wine, it is also how we Dutch describe an old bicycle. Fitting for our lively northern College city full of students and... old bikes. Barrel is a unique winebar. It feels like a regular bar, but there's table service, plenty of wine knowledge and a large wine list to match. In spring and summer, you can also enjoy the hidden garden terrace!

Barrel offers a comprehensive wine list with around 1500 entries. Thanks to Coravin, we always have around 85 wines by the glass (including Ports, Madeira, Sherries etc). Our customers can order a 'small tasting' comprising of 4, 6 or 8 half glasses or a themed tasting. Of course, we also offer private tasting possibilities. Food choices include cheese, cured meat and canned fish specialties.

Our sommelier team is composed of Martijn Fernhout, Youri Unett and Inge Fernhout-Janknegt. Martijn (SDEN4, WSET Level 3) and Youri (SDEN4) are certified wine professionals, while Inge is currently pursuing her SDEN4 qualification.

Together, they bring a strong level of expertise and a deep passion for wine, ensuring a carefully curated and ever-evolving wine selection.
