Babylon Alfresco Bar

Experience: Sophisticated & Stylish

Specialist in: Chardonnay | New Zealand | Pinot Noir

Babylon Alfresco Bar sits above Riverside Market, a modern crossroads where people come together over good food and something great in the glass. From sunny afternoons to golden hour, dinner and late-night drinks, the focus is on warm hospitality, plates to share and a thoughtful drinks programme in a space made for settling in and staying awhile.

Our by-the-glass programme is broad and exploratory, with a strong Aotearoa focus alongside producers from across Europe, Australia and the USA. The list balances serious producers, interesting regions and wines that start conversations, while still feeling relaxed and easy to enjoy. For guests wanting to explore further, there’s also a reserve list of rarer and older bottles.

GLASS HIGHLIGHTS

Subject to availability*

Petit Chablis, Albert Bichot, 2023

Chablis is one of the world’s great Chardonnay regions, known for its cool climate, limestone soils and unmistakable freshness. Petit Chablis offers a more relaxed way into that style, and Albert Bichot brings plenty of pedigree behind the bottle. A great choice for guests wanting to see what makes Chablis so special without overcomplicating it.

Damsteep Pét Nat, Black Estate, 2025

Pét-Nat might feel very current, but it’s actually one of the oldest ways of making sparkling wine, using the ancestral method where fermentation finishes in bottle. Black Estate brings that tradition into a modern Waipara context, creating something lively, playful and full of personality. A great reminder that some of wine’s biggest trends are really old traditions coming back around.

Gibbston, Valli, 2023

Valli is one of those producers that really reflects the strength of Central Otago winemaking. Grant Taylor is a true pioneer of Pinot Noir in the region, and alongside powerhouse winemaker Jen Parr, there is some serious pedigree behind this bottle. Gibbston is the prettier, more delicate side of Central Otago Pinot, and this wine is a beautiful expression of its terroir, with lifted perfume, finesse and elegance.

Elizabeth Adams

Originally from Upstate New York, I moved to New Zealand and began my hospitality career in Queenstown, where working in Gibbston sparked my passion for wine. Now based in Christchurch, I’ve contributed to award-winning wine lists and beverage programmes, and currently lead the wine programme at Babylon. I was ranked #50 in Aotearoa in 2025 and named among the Top 5 Female Sommeliers in 2026.
